good hosts?

PostAuthor: Indyzcar » Tue Aug 29, 2006 9:20 am

So, what are some good, reliable hosts out there? I'm using godaddy as a temporary host. What else is there? I think I want to change.

try the spry banners at the bottom of most pages here. They are not the cheapest, but they are one of the best.

I use Netwisp and absolutly love it. Very fast servers and have had almost no down time in 4 years. They are fairly cheap to. Every time I call for support, I get ahold of the guy every time and he is pretty good with PHP and helps me dig through my code if I am having issues.

I have a couple of sites at wb-hosting (http://www.wb-hosting.com) and really like them. The cost is quite reasonable and the tools provided are quite good. Right now, my favorite tools are the online virus checking of both e-mail and files (it catches c99shell), spam assassin, and boxtrapper.

One caveat to know is that they have moved to php 5, so you will need to either apply the patches or have it fixed. I believe I read somewhere that they can apply the fixes for php 5 if needed.

Whichever one you choose make sure it has CPanel. I'm soo jealous of hosting sites that have that. Currently it takes me forever to make a backup of my sites since Godaddy only has FTP access to it's linux hosting. The performance and stability is great though.

One NOT to use: Dreamhost

Right now I am checking into VPS via Spry. I am testing things on a friends server first to find out what has to be implemented before making the leap. Probably TMI, but I'm pretty excited about the power of VPS.

Hostmonster

Default account allows for nearly any usage you need in particular, their CPanel is horribly up to task and so far their support hasnt faltered, even when hosting a forum from a domain off-site owned by a third party using third-party nameservers, etc.

I think my bill is $30 every three months?

20Gb of space with 20Gb of bandwidth, and virtually unlimited databases and tools usage.

Anyhow, it do NOT recommend HOSTWAY, as while their uptime and services are immaculate, they charge everyone as if they were a money-making powerhouse unconscious of costs of operation...when i left their services they were charging me upwards of $120 a month for less than half the services Hostmonster provided for and average of $10 a month.

Anyhow check hostmonster out.

Ciao

Tony

20gb of space and 20gb of bandwidth?

That probably works out okay, but if u ever were to actually use all 20gb of space you would most likely need a lot more than 20gb of bandwidth. I like to see about 10x bandwidth when compared to space but that's just me.

I had a host once (bought a website on ebay...bad experience) that offered me 250mb of space and 250mb of bandwidth. I thought that was completely ridiculous. It was a blog site they sold to me... so if the people that signed up for my website ended up filling it up to the full 250 mb with their pictures and media and such, that 250mb would be wasted in a day.

I haven't completely read through this thread yet, but stay away from Ipower. That's my advice. They can't seem to keep my server up for a full 24 hours for the last 6 months.

Just a quick comment before the shills hit the thread. I am not sure about many hosts but I think IM has not run very well on shared hosting plans. This is just my experience and you may have better results. If you are having slow load times I can honestly say its your host. Right now I have a copy of the forums on a pure dedicated server. Nothing else is running on it except the stuff that it needs to function, ie OS, Apache, mysql, etc.

I will point my domain to that server OR I am looking into getting a VPS plan from Spry Hosting. The VPS is the affordable equal to dedicated. Or so I hope.

^ U are correct sir.

Seems to me that shared hosts can sometimes have problems with IM. Main reason being all the limits and restrictions that are set on the accounts. U can have 50gb of space and 500gb of data transfer but the real value lies in things like the SQL query restrictions and stuff like that which can slow your forum down.

Once 1.4.1 is finalized I will be putting it on my Ipower VPS and I will let you all know how that turns out compared to my shared hosting. As of right now a straight vanilla version of IM 1.4.1 beta seems to run okay on it.

I have just opened an account with hostmonster there services seem fine but one problem I have found is that I cant seem to get thumbnail to show in my forum, they say they have GD support available in on all their servers but it does not work for me I looked in phpinfo and no mention of gd support is there either, I have no idea how to activate it or get it running so I am not sure if IM or any other board that requires gd support for thumbnails will work. http://www.abcunited.info is the site if you want to check it out for speed. To test I have installed coppermine image from their fantastico section and that work fine, so I am at a loss as to why it does not work with integramod?

I have made a post for support here but no luck as yet

By all means. I'd be interested to know the results. <img>

With regard to hostmonster and the post I made above ^^ http://integramod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15821#15821 I can now say that there support seems really good and GD support is available the problem was it was not configured on my server, and they resolved the issue for me and now my site seems to be running fine. SO hostmonster get a thumbs up from me

Yes, they are fast.
IM Loads in 0.46865 seconds for me. (1.16562 on dialup)

faster than 8.65626 (Which was my prev host)

Master Dwarf: I should also say that the beta version of 1.4.1 runs pretty well. Obviously my forum might be bogged down a little bit due to the fairly enormous amount of data it has on it, but here are some test results of my forum on my shared host (optimized with cache'd blocks) versus IM 1.4.1 BETA with no optimization at all:

Portal.php
Shared: 2.6154
VPS: 1.3453

Album.php
Shared: 1.8823
VPS: 1.213

Calendar.php
Shared: 1.5121
VPS: 0.9738

Links.php
Shared: 1.444
VPS: 0.9057

Those are just some examples of the comparisons. I should also note that on my shared host (and only on my shared host) there were 2 occasions just during this quick test where the page load took more than 12 seconds and I kept having to hit RELOAD to get a more accurate reading. This is a major problem with shared hosts: If somebody else has a big spike in traffic it can affect the entire line of sites on that server even if it's only momentarily.

On the particular shared host i'm on (ipowerweb) it is not uncommon that at least on 2-3 occasions every hour the pages become nearly unaccessible (page loads of over 15 seconds) for a few minutes.

I'm very excited to get on my VPS where I won't have to deal with this anymore <img>

Thanks for the info Zac. Yeah, I know my host sux0rs big time and that has really left me skeptical to shared hosting no matter what deal they offer. 1 terabyte of storage, 1 million emails, unlimited domains, 50 gigawatts of bandwidth :?

My bad experiences are more often than not. VPS or dedicated will be the future host of my site. :-?
