Microsoft asking EVERYONE to rewrite web pages for IE 7

PostAuthor: Driver 7 » Wed Mar 29, 2006 9:05 pm

Just saw this on Digg.

I have not learned everything involved with this but as far as I can tell, If you have any flash used on your website you will have to fix your site so IE users will be able to view your web site.

Here is what I saw on DIGG....

"According to information reaching eWEEK, Microsoft announced plans during a conference call on March 28 wherein Redmond officials reiterated the need for Web pages to be completely re-authored to avoid possible disruptions as a result of major changes to IE 7 as a result of a patent dispute"

LINK

Also, I found a great link (Blog) that explains whats up and how to fix your site.

On the KISS demo site I ask people to use Firefox as I don't have the time to fix IE errors. I spent two days modifying template to work in IE and now they are going to screw things up again by introducing a new versionà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦
It may be true that IE currently holds 60% of the market share but I reckon 80% of that 60% are under 10 years old <img>

PS I downloaded the demo version of IE7 but it failed to install reporting is could not install on my OSà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦ I use WINDOWS 2000 go figureà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦

I have no choice but to fix these issues on clients websites however I always recommend firefox and my own personal sites shall be staying as they are.

Hopefully these error on microsofts part will lead to a huge increase in FF users. Every community out there should be doing their part to recommend firefox and rid this world of the digital bug they refer to as IE.

I agree I was talking to my son and his scool and infact all the schools here have a deal that they have to use microsoft...so yes it doesnt surprise me that the majority of users are school kids...

Imagine the figures in the US with schools using the software there ......they are never going to show correct stats....

I have been using FF since it first started and always will...

I was asked recently to do some work at daughters school, basically install new print server and make sense of their school network.

I installed Firefox and set it as primary browser.

The headmaster there has since commented that he has no clue how to change it back to explorer or even where the explorer icons all went (removed from desktop). I was about to tell him when he said:
"no dont tell me, its better to be dumb with a decent browser than know how to get explorer back and get in trouble for not doign so"

Made me laugh.

By the way, this has to do with the way that IE handles ActiveX controls and embedded files (such as Flash files and audio files) on a web page. Unless there is something new that I'm unaware of.

And yes, it would be nice if Microsoft adhered to standards. Of course, this is Microsoft we're talking about here. <img>

Microsoft has never adhered to standards. They feel they ARE the standard. They have whole teams devoted to squashing better ideas. Case in point Direct-X It was a dismal api, but it was thiers. Did they conform to the vastly superiour OpenGL? No they strongarmed and intimidated every game programmer and video card maker, to primarily support DX. I could go on and on about MS. I live 20 miles from thier Redmond Campus, I have built thier buildings, and friends of mine have been afilliated with Mr Gates, since he stole his first idea (dos) I have no respect for them and I seriously doubt it ever crossed their minds to conform

When I code, I always try to keep the site towards the standards. That usually makes things quite nice in Firefox. Because of the still high number of IE users (more than 60% of my visitors), I still try to make the site look as close as possible when viewed in IE. My focus, though, remains on standards, not on IE compatibility.

You could use the security mod to deny access to the site when viewed with IE and have them upgrade to Firefox?

Altho I love the idea, it would infact keep alot of traffic from your site.

I get them to my site and then educate them from there. It works pretty well that way.

Would be nice, but there are some odd people out there (believe it or not) that area actually against Firefox. Then there are others who can't change browsers (working on library/school/etc) computers. Alas, the IE issue isn't going away any time in the near future.

You wont believe thisà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦ New install of Windows 2000 on new drive, connect to net using IE, download anti virus software and started a scanà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦

Next minute I hade two virusesà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦ You can be serious who in their right mind would use IE.

IE (any version) is an accident waiting to happen <img>

Well. I agree with everyone. There is no alternative to FF.

Well I kinda like Avant browser but that's just a modded IE.

However. Here is a screen shot from Google analytics for my site traffic from the last week, and it shows what browsers people are using to view my site.

[flash=,:2l7801c4]http://www.btusquad.net/stuff/google/anal2.gif[/flash:2l7801c4]

How can I not fix my site so that it works with the next IE.

I have to. Period.

It will be easier than convincing %56.60 of my visitors to switch to FF.

I hate to admit it but I really don't like Firefox[flash=,:2vd5wslj]http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/8023/shy20wc.gif[/flash:2vd5wslj]
I only ever use it to test that coding works in firefox as well as IE

I think it's kinda unfair to design sites that are not compatible with IE just because you think that Firefox is better or more stable. Personally I think it is a matter of personal choice.

I think the firefox browser looks yukky and I don't like the way it downloads. But like I said that is just MHO

Ebony grab the noia 2.0 extreme theme it make sit look loads better.

People do not design for firefox they design for web standards (or they should) it is IE that does not follow these standards as they consider themselves better!

Well, I was using Firefox until I found 2 distinct issues with Firefox....

1- It doesn't play well with the scrolling text on my Integramod install. If I hover over the text it stops, but as soon as I move my mouse up to grab a topic near the top of the box, the text moves up with it which means I gotta move my mouse out of the box and wait for the it to come back up

2- I have 2 integra boards integrated together and Firfox doesn't like that one bit. In IE I can pass between teh boards with the same session and cookie, but in Firefox it wont carry over teh sessions and it wont let me login to the other site. I login and it refreshes the page but I'm still not logged in.

I can't do homebanking with Firefox
Some online-games only work with IE...

But I know that it is because of the way Microsoft manipulates things...
They change standards constantly to make sure that others can't follow...
That's their typical way to illiminate alternatives so they can stay on top of everything...

Watch Firefox flicks for reasons to use FF.

Plus on my Forum I put up descriptions of my favorite extensions.

I used Firefox for a while, but it was giving me problems at certain sites and I got annoyed.

So I downloaded Maxthon, and I love it. It has Noia skin as well. It is a modded IE, but I hardly ever if rarely have any problems out of it. Works good with everythign I use it for.

I added a couple mods to make the tabs a little better to work with, but for the most part it is good right out of download.

You don't have to spend precious time searching for 100's of extensions to make a plain browser better and load slower.

Even with the Firefox speed up loader thingy it was slower than my maxthon.

People do not design for firefox they design for web standards (or they should) it is IE that does not follow these standards as they consider themselves better!

thanks for the advice simon I will try that out ...muchly appreciated.

OMG.

Everyone has to download this and watch it. It's quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen.

FF Rules!

ps: you need Quick time installed to watch it.

lmao. I watched it again after I woke up. I wonder if that will ever be a tv commercial. It's so funny.

It perfectly sums up this topic.
