Looking for help with php coding

ok, i am trying to make a simple php web site, and i have found a simple php template that was shared on another forum by one of its members that would accomplish this, but i do not want to use her's for a couple of reasons.

1. i do not think she shared it to be used by others
2. i would prefer my nav to be on the left and not the top
3. i definately want different colors than she used.

now i have no problems changing the color, even the background images, the basic things that are easily changed, but the major thing i want changed is the placement of the nav menu and the placement of a "chat box/tag board and i have not managed to figure out how to do this yet. <img>
