Opera Version 9 incompatabilites

PostAuthor: mspringgay » Thu Jun 22, 2006 6:24 am

Appears that Opera Version 9 doesn't work with integramod in default mdoe. If changed to mimic IE then everything appears to work. Anyone have an idea what maybe causing default Opera from working?

Can you be a little more specific? What exactly is the problem?

Problem encountered while decoding data. Possibly due to corrupted data.

http://integramod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1320

---
can confirm. identifying as opera gives the error, switching to ie as identifier fixes it.
not sure if it's integra or opera, I'll check the opera forums.

//edit:
It's not happening on the official Phpbb forums. so I would say it's an Integramod Issue somewhere. Although problems with various boards and the new Opera Version have been reportet at Opera.com

Cheers
Azrael

A friend also had this problem using Opera 8 on my 1.4.0 site. The problem just went away one day... I'm not sure why. It's possible that he updated his Opera, but I don't think so. I was also running Opera 8 at the time and I could visit my site without incident. You may want to just uninstall and reinstall the browser, redownloading might be a good idea as well.

EDIT: Just asked him whether he updated, and he said yes. So, it looks like an Opera issue?

Of course you could use Firefox or IE instead <img>

I am sure it is an opera issue, but you cannot get more updated than V.9

To answer Jason's question when using opera to either integrmod.com or the site I admin I get the following displayed: à¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¹ nothing more.

If the site prefences within opera are changed so the browser indentification is IE it works. Using mozilla also does not work.

No problems though accessing phpbb.com includeing the forums there.

As to using IE or firefox well those are my normal browsers. Unfortunately I have a vocal user that prefers Opera. For now the user can work around by setting the site indentification so not a huge issue just thought I should check in case someone had the magic one line fix that would let me appease this person.

Please do not get me wrong, I think it is a bug that should be sorted out if possible and I wish I did have a magic one-liner :(

it is not our bug. I just installed Opera with default settings. I have about 20 sites that I frequent...EVERY one of them has display issues. Opera is junk!

My site is not accessible via Opera 9.0 as well, whereas it was compatible with Opera 8.x previously. Whether an IM issue or Opera, I hope it is resolved soon. If an Opera user visits now, they will not necessarily know that it is a browser issue. They may assume that the site is down or even defunct.

Here is a lil trick how u can surf IM related site via Opera ...

1 - Open your Opera web browser.

2 - Type your site's URL in the address bar and hit Enter

3 - Now you wil see sort of a blank white page. Dont worry.. Right click the main page or anywhere in the browser..

4 - Click on " Edit Site Preferences "

5 - In the popup window, you wil see 4 TABs.. Choose " Network " Tab..

6 - Now drop down the " Browser Identification " and Select " Identify as Internet Explorer " and Click OK.

7 - Press F5 or Refresh the page..

Hop this wil do the trick <img>

Re: Opera Version 9 incompatabilites

Version 9.10 of Opera has been released and IntegraMOD sites are apparently still incompatible. Neither my IM 1.4.0 site or this IM 1.4.1 site work at all. A white screen is displayed with a few graphic characters in the upper lefthand corner. It is disconcerting to think that many visitors may arrive at my site and think that it is down indefinately or defunct permanently. I know that Opera is not the most popular browser, but it is a slice of the web pie which should not be overlooked. We now have a Nintendo Wii in our house as of Christmas, which offers internet browsing via a custom version of Opera. Interestingly, it arrives with an error message at IM sites which suggests that the site has corrupt data. Wii Opera, as with PC versions of Opera, has no trouble with stock phpBB sites and Invision Power Board.

Re: Opera Version 9 incompatabilites

PostAuthor: Teelk » Fri Dec 29, 2006 12:06 pm

I used to use Opera exclusively, it was the best and there was no substitute, not even Firefox. But, since version 9 the quality has slipped significantly, IM is not the only website to fall prey to the Opera 9's terrible page rendering. If you set the Opera Browser to identify as Firefox or IE when visiting an IM site, it'll allow you to visit the site, but you'll get multiple rendering issues.

I don't know what the Opera people did to this new version, but I'm incredibly disappointed that a major browser's rendering capabilities are so terrible.

Despite that, I think that it's important to fix at least the "corrupt data" error, so that users of IM sites can visit with Opera 9. However, if switching Opera to identify as another browser fixes that error, I have to assume that IM is somehow blocking Opera as an agent. But, I know that it isn't or at least isn't purposefully.

If it could be determined generally what is blocking Opera, ie. User agent blocking, a piece of code it doesn't like, etc then a dev could have a starting point to try and fix this problem.

Right now, all I can do is keep trying I guess.

This is interesting. I have seen similar behavior with Opera a couple of times in the past on various computers, but right now both on my laptop and my home computer my 1.4.0 and my 1.4.1 sites (as well as the integrmod.com site) all come up fine in Opera 9.1.0 and show no rendering problems.

Although I test my sites with IE, Firefox and SeaMonkey (Mozilla), I use Opera exclusively for my personal browsing, having found it the most stable and secure of all of these browers and the one with the best feature set right out of the box.

Please give me a link to a site you are having problems rendering in Opera, as I would like to take a look. As I mentioned though, right now with version 9.1.0 I am not seeing a problem.

For me there's a major issue with the ACP. The DHTML slide menu doesn't work and the left frame is too large. Are you getting this issue at all?

No, I'm not seeing any problems at all in the ACP. I generally use the "Fit to Width" option, particularly on my laptop (15 inch screen) but I don't see a problem either with that option on or off. The DHTML slide menu works fine and the left frame size seems fine with the "Fit to Width" option on or off (it is larger with that option off, but I thnk that is mainly because I constantly leave it on).

I'm not saying I haven't seen the problem Dr. Bantham described above - the graphic characters in the upper-left corner. Whenever I saw that in the past I simply changed over the options for that page to have Opera identify itself as Firefox, and the problem went away. However within the last month or so I haven't seen this problem at all, and I no longer have to modify the network settings to mask as IE or Firefox. I had thought this was due to an update to Opera, but I guess that isn't it. I'm not sure why it would appear to be a problem on certain platforms and not others. Both of the computers I am working with right now are running XP Pro, but that shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Could it have anything to do with additional modifications made to IM? Both the 1.4.0 and the 1.4.1 RC5 portals I have up have no modifications other than the obvious security modifications we had to include a few months ago.

Hadn't tried it in a while, but you're right. The rendering issues seem to be fixed, for IM anyway. I still had to identify as Firefox however, or I got the strange characters in the upper left corner.

Teelk: Now that you've had it work correctly by having it identify as Firefox, could you try going back to the Opera setting, reloading and seeing if the problem goes away? I was thinking that it might need to load one time correctly and then it might be OK after that. That seems to have been my experience.

Once I switch back to identifying as opera it doesn't work anymore.

EDIT: I found where the problem is, it's with the gzip compression code in includes/page_header.php. Opera must not like the useragent code in there somewhere. If you turn off gzip in ACP>General Admin>Configuration, then Opera can access the page.

That is strange, cause I've fixed the issue for the most part. It was affecting both my test boards and any live IM board I visited. I'm still working on a bug or two before I release this one though, as another issue popped up after the fix.
