[solved] Some people see white screen. But others are fine

PostAuthor: mrbud » Wed Apr 12, 2006 8:19 am

Well let me see what everyone thinks about this.

I have several users that are having a problem actually getting to my site.
They say they are just getting a white screen with done in progress bar area. Some of them have also told me that it seems to be computer related. They have more than one computer in the house and can access site from one computer but not the other. This unfortunately has been going on for sometime and no one said anything to me about It. So I don't know if it was something I changed or not. Weird how you could get there from one spot in your house and not from another don't you think?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh by the way the site is http://www.nhbproclub.com if anyone wants to see if it is working for them.

Thanks,

MrBud

I changed your topic to be more descriptive.

Can you ask someone who is seeing your forum as a white screen to try it in another browser on the same PC.

Also see what browsers are used when seeing this.

Sorry everyone I forgot a couple of things.

Some have tried with IE, and Firefox I know. Not sure about other browsers though.

I know they have all also tried deleting cookies, history, temp pages, etc.
All the normal things.

Thanks,
MrBud

I would test with a second browser on the same PC just to see the results.

you should aask your members who are having this trouble, if they are behind a router or not. Meanning, are they accessing your site from the same ip on a different comp. Also what firewall they are using.

If you are using the same login name and password, go to the PC with the white pages and delete all cookies and cache. Then try again, nine time out of ten it a cookie problem.

Yes, software firewalls can be a pain. Ask them to temp disable them and test. If they have a router a software firewall is really unecesary.

Thanks Fubie for the words of kindness.

And yes It's Mostly Helter's doing. I've made some minor changes to it but I give the credit to Helter. Thanks Helter..

I will talk to the troubled ones tonite about firewalls. Haven't done that one yet.

Thanks again for the immediate responses.

I'll keep you posted as to what we found out.

Ok. I figured it out. Not quite sure what was causing it but we got it. I had enabled gzip compression I guess. I disabled it and those that couldn't get on now can. Any ideas why this would be a true statement? Might just be something that someone wants to look into. Anyways it way to early in the morning for me to be thinking about all this stuff. Thanks for the help and if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Thanks,

MrBud

THis may be part of the Norton firewall problem. It was noted when IM 140m first came out that GZIP compression caused white pages with Norton firewall. It was sorted in later releases but I do not remember how. if this is the cause it suggests you have a early release of 140.

Re the style, sorry Helter I did clean up the images, you may remember they had a lot of grey from the original style. If I did not send them to you, I can <img>

Re: [solved] Some people see white screen. But others are fi

PostAuthor: TMages2 » Fri Apr 14, 2006 8:24 pm

I'm using Norton Internet Security 2005 and was one of the people effected with the white page of d'oh.

Once MrBud turned off the GZIP compression it fixed the problem for me but I'm fairly sure that at least one of the others effected doesn't run NIS and they were able to veiw the site once this was turned off.
I'll see if I can compile some kind of list of what people were running if that would be usefull in figuring this out.

Hey twitchy,

You need to increase the amount of allowed admin/mods in ACP>Security>Special to the correct amounts.
