.htaccess file for the root folder

ok, I know this command is easy.

but because i have a subfolder in my public_html folder for my forum, my domain doesn't automatically see it.

What do I put in the htaccess file to point it to my forum folder? (i don't want my folder hiearchy to show in the address bar when you navigate)
