Update from 2.0.17 to 2.0.22 Failed

Hello All!
I tried updating a small IM1.4.0/2.0.17 forum using the recently posted 2.0.22 files and it failed. All of the IM Portal elements, forums, etc. disappeared, and when opening the portal page I get this:
First I copied in all the files in the "2.0.17 to 2.0.22" zip directory, and ran the "update_to_latest.php" which returned no errors at all. When that failed, I copied back all the original 2.0.17 files, and then laid over the top of that the complete set of changed files, then the 2.0.17 to 2.0.22, ran the update, same result. I haven't yet looked at the DB directly to see if the changes were made as advertised.
Two questions.
1) Anyone know what stupid thing I did here to cause this?
2) If I did a complete, clean install of the latest package is there a method of importing the DB data either from the 2.0.17 backups, or perhaps from a backup made after the failed upgrade to 2.0.22?
Thanks!
