Hide Age

After a few complaints from members on my own board I thought i would mention this.

I think the age display should be made optional. This is to help safeguard against certain ID thefts etc. Most banks require DOB as first question and users of IM may not be happy with it being on display for all to see.

My own site has been modified to included a check box as to whether age is shown or not. This is selectable upon registration and can be changed later on if needed and for existing members:

Its just one of those things that might be good to include in a future release of IM.

I would include the age but there is no need for DOB.

DOB allows the birthday pop ups.

Okay you say limit it to day and month...but then age would give away the year.

Hence a hide age mod is needed.

Also making members enter an age helps conform with certain laws etc. If the site is over 16's only and the entrance registration states that then the member has to lie yes?

Should any court action then be brought for allowing a youngster to sign up...the onus is on him/her for lieing.

It is for sure....but should this not be a function available by default for security reasons?

My preference would be to display the age of a member and not the DOB. However the DOB would still be mandatory during registration. The birthday mod would work as usualà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦ Any one with the time could obtain the birthday of a member by viewing Happy Birthday listing but who has that much timeà¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦

I've also added Hide Age to my forums (I'd write how, but I forgot how I did it). Of course, one thing I discovered when I added the Hide Age mod was that you had to make sure that the calendar reflected the change, or the age would still be displayed there.

If someone could design an age mod that does the following, it would be great:

1) Hide Birth Year and Age
2) Hide Birthdate, but display age
3) Hide Birthdate and Age
4) COPPA compliance. If an age under 13 is selected, then it goes to the page to fax, just as a base install of phpBB. (This is a big legal issue for US residents)
5) Minimum age. If a user selects an age less than the minimum age, then they are blocked from registering.

I would like if i as an admin could select if the birthdays are to be shown in the calendar for everyone to see or not, or let some usergroups see the birthdays and other usergroups cant see it...
Like i have a Public usergroup for people that are not members of my guild, and i have Member usergroup, if i somehow could select that the Member usergroup could see the birthdays in the calendar that would be great

As it is now i belive that its only the admin that can see peoples birthsdays.
Or is there a way to let normal users see the birthdays ?

I personally like the birthday popups and what nots like that, but as stated at the other site, I am concerned about users ages simply due to idiot child predators on the internet. I run a site that is fully intended for flight simulator and we fly online alot with each other and it attracts alot of kids. So there for, i dont like the age showing up. My daughter and my nephew both are registered there and unfortunately, their ages show. Not happy with this. I could give up birthday pop ups and such to hide a kids age from the public. My two cents.. thx.
