I will add here some comments I made for doswald in a pm;
The school sites that I do are for children 7-11 year olds. It is run for the school not as a 'fan' site so to speak. To make moderation easier there are 2 main forums in school, for all things related to school; and out of school for the rest. I have 2 installs, 1 is the public site that is more for presentation of the school on the net and the other is the pupils' own website.
Don't forget there is alot of responsibility that goes with leading a school website. Kids these days like to steal passwords, post malicious content about 'friends' and generally be a pain. Make sure you patrol your site, to make sure you are not liable for lawsuits and that no paedophiles are looking in either.
Sometimes it is better to hold control over the registrations.
