Was having the same problems mentioned in the above thread. Turns out that the includes/news_common.php file was missing the php after <? and the closing parameter was also missing at the end of the page. Same thing with the includes/news_data.php.

Checked the download date on my zip file and is dated 10 Mar (full install version). Seems this bug is still in the final release.
