I am working towards upgrading my site from importal to integramod. Its been a tedious process for me because it is a live site and I want the transition to go smoothly with as little down time as possible.

I ran across an article that claimed that Integramod as a cpu and memory hog. This concerns me because I am also switching hosts and do not want to cause problems. I wish I could move up to a dedicated server but thats not in the budget at this point.

I don't think so, but i guess it's subjective. Someone on a crappy host may disagree.
Also it's a lot of mods so I guess that will add some overhead but to be expected.

compared to plain phpbb, yes. If you consider the immense amount of mods added though it is not. Integramod has more function than ANY comparable product.

On my previous host, even a vanilla phpbb3 board ran slowly. My IM141 crawled at times.

On my new host, everything runs like a charm.

When you see numbers like this consistently on your portal, you know it's running smoothly:

I'm convinced that quality of host will determine 'hogness' until you get into a LOT of users simultaneously.

enabling GZIP drive up the CPU and Memory Usage?

Yes it will use some power but it trades off on bandwidth and transfer speed.
This is something you should test to see witch is better in your case.

It's a busy time for my host right now and my slow downs/problems are always sql.
