De.scription and Message

Hey all...I have a very irritating problem with my forum. Lots of folks, including myself are continually getting logged out of the system every few minutes (5 or so).

I have done a search here and found the cookieMOD that was written. However, after having killed my board once, I am a little nervous to see all of the comments about how making cookie changes could prevent people from being able to log into the site. I am not sure if there is a certain set of files I should back up or how to prepare myself to revert back if this should happen.

Here is what my configuration currently shows...

Cookie Domain: http://www.watchgeeks.net
Cookie Name: im_b_248
Cookie Path: /im4/
Cookie Secure: Disabled
Session Length: 3600

When I run cookieMOD, this is what it gives me:

Cookie Domain: .watchgeeks.net
Cookie Name: watcim4_phpbb
Cookie Path: /im4/

So, at this point, I am not sure how to make the cookieMOD settings take effect...there is a check box on the page...should I check that and hit enter or what? Or should I just make the changes in the ACP by hand?

Also...will the change from http://www.watchgeeks.net to .watchgeeks.net (cookie domain) and im_b_248 to watcim4_phpbb (cookie name) do the trick?

Since we went live on Friday night, we are keeping a good amount of users online and I don't want to screw anything up. As a complete and total newbie to all of this, I would really appreciate your help. Sorry if my questions seem a little stupid...

Thanks in advance!

Michael

I just checked in your acp and your cookie domain was incomplete in acp/general managment/configuration
you had
Cookie Domain: watchgeeks.net
it must be
Cookie Domain: .watchgeeks.net

99.999% of login problems are related to cookies if the server is setup correctly. Luckily most servers are setup correctly, however, some are not. There are a ton of webhosts out there that are simply average joe's with a fast internet connection and a comp setup as a web server. One thing that average Joe has in common with the biggest hosting companies is that 90% of the time, if you have a problem their first response is "it is the software" if you dont go away, they may look into it.
I think the added ( . ) will probably solve your prob. I browsed around for a good 10 minutes and didnt get logged out, and when i re-visited your site, I was still logged in. Let me know if you still have troubles with this

Thanks Helter! I saw you logged in...does this mean I probably don't need the "www" portion of the domain name? Just leave it as "domain.net"?

Thanks again as this has been driving me absolutely crazy! As well as all of my users!

I hate to say it...but it is still happening....GRRRRR!!!!

I had logged out of the site, deleted all cookies and then restarted Firefox. After logging back in, it bounced me back out after about 5 minutes or so.

Thoughts?

since your both using the Dark theme and it was made with phpbb2.0.21, ill look into the phpbb template differences between 2.0.21 and 2.0.23.

ive gone all the way back you phpbb2.0.18 and not found a missing update that could affect this. I use FF for my daily browsing also and cannot reproduce any of these problems.

I am using the latest version of Firefox and it does it to me as well as just about everyone else on my site using a variety of different web browsers and operating systems. I just watched it "knock off" about 40 users a couple of minutes ago and I have yet another thread where folks are complaining about it. I am sure open to suggestions because I'd like for the forum to work the way it is supposed to.

I appreciate everyone's help with this!

one thing you have to realize is that when you see 40 ppl online in the whos online block, it is not reall time, meaning you will only see the updated amount of users when you refresh the page. It is more likely that most of them left on their own. It is the same here, though I dont here ppl say they lost their session. Often they log in, look at the new posts or their PM's and leave

Re: Can't stay logged in

PostAuthor: Watcher » Tue Mar 25, 2008 11:59 pm

i have fixed my problem this is what i did, ACP/Configuration, go to cookie settings. Cookie domain is usely set to blank with nothing in the field, than by default the Cookie name is set to (i did not save what was there) but it was something like IM2-268 or something like that, and Cookie path is set to default where as mine in /

so i changed my settings to

-------------------------------------------Dont forget the . in front of the cookie domain
Cookie domain<------> .worldofarkania.net <--> this is my Domain
Cookie name<--------> ReakNCrew<---> i changed the name to match my web site
Cookie path<--------> /<---> stayed the same

my web address is http]worldofarkania.net/ReakNCrew/portal.php?

and i have another forum with this address http://worldofarkania.net/Watchers_Art/portal.php
and i had to set my cookie stuff to

Cookie domain<------>.worldofarkania.net <--same domain
Cookie name<-------->Watchers_Art <--differant cookie name to match the site
Cookie path<----------> /

AND THIS IS A MUST in firefox go to tool/Clear Private Data check all box's and than press clear all data now, than in your forum, on the main page, clear the cookies, shut down firefox and restart now relog and see if that works

Please let me know if this helps you set the cookie settings to keep you logged in
